Stronger presence of mechanical and plant engineering – keen interest in pellet quality at 9th Pellets Industry Forum trade conference
The organizers of Interpellets 2009 take stock: Approximately 5,000 visitors attended the international trade fair for pellets technology.

“The exhibition and industry forum reflected the further internationalization of the European pellets industry and grew both in terms of surface area and participant numbers: This is a pleasing result given the strained economic situation,” concluded Markus Elsässer, CEO of Solar Promotion GmbH and organizer of Interpellets 2009 and the 9th Pellets Industry Forum. 138 pellets industry manufacturers, wholesalers and a greatly expanded supply industry presented their products and services over a three-day period at the New Stuttgart Trade Fair Center. The exhibition area grew to 8,600 square meters, an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year. Participant numbers at the 9th Pellets Industry Forum, the two-day specialist conference devoted to market conditions and developments in the wood pellet industry, increased by 11 percent: The conference recorded 535 experts from 35 countries.

The new EU norm for wood pellets which will come into force from 2010, the increased requirements on the quality of wood pellets and the upstream production chain – these all featured among the topics discussed by industry experts from all over the world at the two-day 9th Pellets Industry Forum.

“The production, trade and logistics of wood pellet fuel are becoming ever more significant. In turn, the demands on international collaboration
increase. The encouraging response from our trade participants reassures Satisfied exhibitors
at Interpellets 2009 Peter Hauk, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister for Food and Rural Development, visited Interpellets us that we have got the concept of the Pellets Industry Forum right,” states Martin Pfränger, project manager of the trade conference whose participant numbers hit a record level of 535. Wijnand Schonewille, a business developer at the Dutch Port of Rotterdam, reaffirmed this: “The Pellets Industry Forum is one of the few large conferences in this field. As a participant I am here for the first time, particularly to find out how the market is developing. Above all, questions regarding the role of the port in the logistics chain are of interest to us.” Michael Williams, Director of Strategy, Planning & Process Management at Westervelt Renewable Energy in the USA also underlined his view: „(...) I came here to learn more about the European pellet market and to get a better understanding of European Companies. On the one hand I get the information I'm interested in concerning demand, pricing, environmental and quality requirements. On the other hand I meet people from other countries. In my opinion the congress is the best networking event for the pellet industry.”

Interpellets 2009 also brought great satisfaction for the 138 exhibitors from 19 countries. “It is mainly the increased presence of mechanical and plant engineering which reflects the rising international demand for expertise in the growing pellet market ,” states organizer Markus Elsässer from Solar Promotion GmbH. Martin Bentele, Managing Director of the German Energy Wood and Pellets Association (DEPV) and the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), summed things up: “The industry demonstrated its capabilities at Interpellets in a comprehensive and convincing manner. It has been shown that heating with pellets can yield the CO2 reductions necessary for meeting climate protection targets in the heating market. From pellet production through trade to combustion technology and accessories, companies are well positioned.”

During a tour of Interpellets 2009, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister for Food and Rural Development, Peter Hauk, appeared impressed by the diversity of the pellet industry. When talking to pellet producers and manufacturers of boilers and stoves, Minister Hauk drew attention to the positive signs for further growth in the pellet industry. He highlighted the opportunities that arise for both the economy and the creation of jobs as a result of these modern, environmentally friendly heating systems.

A delighted Christian Müller, Managing Director of Salmatec Anlagenbau GmbH gave his report of exhibiting at Interpellets: “As a manufacturer of pelleting machines, Interpellets is the annual event for us. The caliber of trade visitors is the most important reason for our attendance: (...) We already had visitors to our booth from Korea, Russia, the Ukraine and Brazil, and will definitely be back again next year.” Robert Velemir, Area Manager for Germany at Piazzetta Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of the Italian pellet stove manufacturer, also appeared to be extremely pleased: “We were so impressed with last year’s Interpellets, at which we exhibited for the first time, that we are represented here again this year. We particularly like the clear concentration of the trade fair. (...) The internationalization of the industry and the trade fair is plainly noticeable. Last year 30 percent of our visitors were from outside Germany, this year it is at least 50 percent. One thing is certain as far as next year goes: We will be back at Interpellets!”

Concise view of the pellets industry: Interpellets 2009 trade fair shows international range

Stuttgart, October 7, 2009 – The European market for wood pellets is growing: Interpellets 2009, the international trade fair for pellets technology, starts today at the Stuttgart Trade Fair Center against the backdrop of excellent market conditions. 138 exhibitors (2008: 121), of whom 35 percent are from outside Germany, will present the entire spectrum of pellets technology on an exhibition area of 8,600 square meters in size (2008: 7,000). Organizer Solar Promotion and supporters German Energy Wood and Pellets Association (DEPV) and German Solar Energy Society (DGS) are expecting a total of 6,000 visitors over three days. Over 535 experts from 35 countries are in attendance at the 9th Pellets Industry Forum, which runs until today in Stuttgart’s International Congress Center. On Friday, October 9, Interpellets is also open to the general public: Information will be available regarding all classes of wood pellet heating systems, legal conditions and current subsidies.

Diverse and internationally oriented: exhibitors from 19 countries at Interpellets 2009
Large boilers, small heaters, a large variety of storage systems, complete production plants and vendor components: With many international players, the industry centered on wood pellet technology will present itself in all its diversity at Interpellets 2009, which opens today in Stuttgart. Over the next three days, 138 exhibitors will present the complete spectrum of pellets technology. “This year’s Interpellets concept is even more comprehensive and more internationally-oriented than that of last year,” states Markus Elsässer, CEO of organizer Solar Promotion, with satisfaction. “Above all, the number of suppliers at Interpellets has grown sharply: We are recording higher numbers of pelleting plant and conveyor system providers as well as highly specialized suppliers from the initial section of the pellets valueadded chain,” says Elsässer.

But even the number of wholesalers and manufacturers of boilers and heaters has risen in comparison to last year. “This year we are able to welcome exhibitors from 19 countries – last year only nine countries were represented," confirms Elsässer. Also aimed at raising awareness of the industry’s diversity is the PHAC Forum, “Fit for the pellets market”, which is offered within the Interpellets fringe program. It is geared toward trade professionals and provides comprehensive tips and reports which can be used in practice. The PHAC Forum will take place each day between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Exhibitor Forum, booth 3.7.40.

Pellet industry trend: building owners invest increasingly in pellet heating systems
“Contrary to the declining national economy, the German pellets industry has had a positive start to 2009,” says DEPV Chairwoman Beate Schmidt. Pellets heating systems are in great demand. Nationally applicable subsidy conditions coupled with numerous programs at state and municipal level support satisfactory market progression. According to Schmidt, more home owners, as well as municipal and commercial supporters, invested in building renovation work, and primarily in exchanging their heating system technology. This was also shown by results currently published in the German Pellets Industry Report for 2009, produced by Solar Promotion GmbH in collaboration with the DEPV. The industry report reflects the views of manufacturers, wholesalers and pellets technology installers on general development. Around 40 percent of the companies asked are expecting growth of up to 25 percent in 2010. When split into separate fields, the manufacturers of heaters and boilers are looking particularly optimistically toward the next business year: they anticipate growth of over 25 percent.

Heating system exchange in existing buildings: Baden-Württemberg leading the way from January 1, 2010
Martin Bentele, CEO of the DEPV and the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), is happy with the market development, but is demanding reliable political support for the further growth in the pellet industry. “As is already the case in Baden-Württemberg with its Renewable Energy Heating Act, a clear signal could, for example, be a national expansion of the legal obligation to use renewable heating sources, even in existing buildings.” Bentele added that minimum requirements should be placed on the efficiency of existing heating systems in order to clear the refurbishment backlog in German boiler rooms.

From January 1, 2010, Baden-Württemberg will again assume a leading role, as the state’s Renewable Heating Act (EWärmeG) – in contrast to national law – places requirements on the exchange of heating systems in existing buildings, says Gregor Stephani, head of the division for fundamental questions regarding climate protection and law at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, and speaker at the opening of the 9th Pellets Industry Forum on October 6. The specialist conference brings together around 535 industry experts from all over the world and ends on October 7.

Interpellets open to the general public on October 9 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Interpellets also opens its doors to the general public: On Friday October 9, pellet boilers and heaters in all performance categories as well as storage systems to meet every requirement can be viewed at Interpellets. Questions will also be answered regarding current legal conditions and incentive programs.

Europe-wide standardization of wood pellets: Interpellets 2009 presents new EU standard

Pulsating hubs of the pellets industry: 9th Pellets Industry Forum and Interpellets 2009 trade fair provide platform for trends, visions and opportunities

As of 2010, Europe-wide standardized wood pellets will be available to consumers. Under the EU standard, three quality classes will replace the previous country-specific regulations. “Standardized wood pellet fuel will simplify the pellets industry’s market and trade relations between the EU member states and will make heating with wood pellets even more convenient for consumers than before,” says Hans-Martin Behr, member of the board of directors of the German Energy Pellets Association (DEPV), who sits on the European Committee for Standardization for the new EU standard as an advisory member. The 9th Pellets Industry Forum, which takes place in the International Congress Center Stuttgart from October 6-7, will provide around 500 experts from the European pellets industry with details of the practical implementation of the EU wood pellets standard. From October 7-9, the Interpellets 2009 trade fair will become the pulsating hub of the pellets industry, again in the New Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre: around 150 exhibitors and 6,000 visitors are expected in the 7,000 square meter exhibition space. At Interpellets 2009, information will be available on the legal framework, current funding conditions and wood pellet plants as a modern alternative to fossil energy.

Wood pellets will be the first biomass fuel to be produced in accordance with an EU standard. Until now, countries like Germany and Austria have been using their own standards – in Germany wood pellets are certified in accordance with DINplus, while the Austrian ÖNORM standard is known even beyond the country’s borders. Emerging pellets markets with their own pellet production capacity have used these existing standards as a benchmark, but have also introduced their own regulations and quality assurance systems. In future, all existing standards will be superseded by the European pellets standard’s three quality classes: A1, A2 and B.

For end users, the relevant wood pellets class is A1. It complies with the most stringent values overall and is largely based on the high standard of quality set by DINplus. According to the existing plans, A1 wood pellets must have an ash content of under 0.5% when using wood from conifers and under 0.7% when using other types of wood. Instead of bulk density, it will now be necessary to specify the apparent density: the less space there is between the pellets, the greater the apparent density. This is particularly important for pellet stoves as the apparent density influences the quantity of pellets that are conveyed into the combustion chamber if the rotation speed of the automatic screw conveyor remains the same.

Class A2 covers the wider spectrum of raw materials with an ash content of up to 1%. The European pellets standard thus also integrates the slightly wider requirements of heating systems which are used, in particular, in the southern European pellets countries.

The previously undefined category of industrial pellets has finally been settled. The new wood pellets Class B has an even higher ash content and expanded raw material potential such as bark contents. The new EU standard plans to declare any pellets which previously did not comply with the limits of the existing standards – and were mostly burned in large installations or power plants as so-called “industrial pellets“ – as Class-B pellets now.

As of October 1, there will also be new regulations for homeowners and building contractors: the new Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) of 2009 requires that primary energy demand is reduced by 30%. Transmission heat loss must be reduced by 15% through better building insulation. In addition, the Renewable Energies Heat Act (EEWärmeG) has been in force nationwide since January 1, 2009. It obliges building contractors to cover part of the heating requirements for new build with solar energy, biomass, ambient heat or geothermal energy. There are considerable overlaps between these two pieces of legislation: for example, the use of renewable energies such as a pellet boiler or primary boiler with a water jacket reduces primary energy demand, and if the building is also well insulated the heat produced will be enough to surpass this demand.

Interpellets 2009 takes place from October 7-9 and is the only trade fair to feature the full spectrum of the wood pellets industry: from raw material to processing into wood pellets, from transport chain to various storage systems, from a wide range of pellet heaters and boilers to suitable flue gas systems. Interpellets is attended by heating and plumbing technicians, architects, planners, building energy consultants and chimney sweeps as well as representatives from pellets industry wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers. The trade fair gives them a compact overview of current trends, product innovations and services in the European pellets markets. On Friday, October 9, Interpellets will also open its doors to end users. Around 500 industry experts are expected to attend the 9th Pellets Industry Forum on October 6 and 7. They will discuss current trends such as market development in emerging pellets markets, pellet production and quality and new developments related to raw materials.

Small giants in the pellets market: pellets stoves on the rise

The Interpellets 2009 trade fair presents valuable information for heating system installers, building energy consultants, architects and planners.
Stoves fuelled by wood pellets account for around 10 percent of all pellets installations in Germany. According to the German Energy Pellets...

Pellets stoves are being installed in a growing number of German homes. With a wide range of designs available, pellets stoves can be adapted to any look or function: they heat domestic water and support the central heating system during spring and fall, or they are used to heat individual rooms. Air duct pellets stoves, for example, are attractive and easy to use – and present a true alternative to fireplaces and tiled stoves. A fully automated conveyor transports wood pellets from an integrated storage tank to the combustion chamber. Here, the pellets are ignited electrically. The quantity of wood pellets burned can be regulated via the desired heating output or room temperature. High-quality pellets stoves are equipped with a digital-electronic monitoring system which controls the ideal balance of combustion air, pellets volume and operating temperature. “This enables combustion to be perfectly coordinated, creating minimum emissions and maximum efficiency. This contributes to economical and efficient heating management,” explains Horst Dufner, Project Manager of Interpellets. Pellets systems which have a “water jacket” containing a heat exchanger are also able to heat entire buildings: .heating water circulates through this system. The pellets system heats water, which can be used to heat both domestic water and the rest of the house when connected to the heating and water system. This type of heating does not require a separate cellar or heating room. A pellets heater can often cover all a building’s heating requirements, particularly for renovated buildings which meet the low energy house standard and for newly built passive houses. Pellets stoves use between 60% and 95% of their output for heating water, while excess heat is given off into the room. Combining such a system with a solar installation is ideal to make use of the excess heat all year round. A solar thermal, flat or vacuum tube collector will heat potable water in summer and support space heating during spring and fall. Both pellets heaters and solar installations supply their energy to a buffer storage tank.

The Italian heating market is one of the largest markets for pellets heaters: Currently around 700,000 heaters have been installed almost exclusively in residential buildings all over Italy. The reason: Central heating systems are unusual in Italy; the heating season is only 120 days - much shorter than in Germany, for example. Pellets production in Italy is geared towards meeting the needs of home owners, who typically buy small 15kg bags. Pellets consumption has grown from 150,000 metric tons in 2001 to around 800,000 metric tons last year. Since the production volume of 650,000 metric tons does not cover demand, pellets have to be imported from other European countries.

In addition to those for large pellets boilers, state subsidies are also available pellets stoves. Germany has the "Market Incentive Program for Renewable Energies" funded by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). The minimum subsidy for pellets heaters with water jackets is €1,000. For air duct pellets heaters between 5 and 100kW, a fixed rate subsidy of €500 has been available since July 1, 2009, but this must not correspond to more than 20% of the net investment costs. Additional subsidies are available for combination with solar installations.

From October 7 – 9 at the New Stuttgart Trade Fair Center, Interpellets 2009 will present a whole host of wood pellets expertise: information on financial subsidies, advice on pellets heaters and boilers in all performance classes in combination with solar installations, as well as an overview of the entire value-added chain of the pellets industry. A valuable information platform, Interpellets 2009 brings together pellets industry producers, traders and suppliers, who present their technical solutions, services and innovations. Around 500 trade experts are also expected to attend the accompanying 9th Pellets Industry Forum trade congress on October 6 and 7. They will discuss current trends in European pellets markets, as well as the challenges they face and their future prospects.
