Previously pellet mills used chips as a sawmill by-product. Chips are the best material for the high quality pellets that are used in private households. However, the chip supply is decreasing worldwide and increasingly logs are being used for the production of these pellets. HOLTEC meets this challenge by offering different logyard concepts depending on the log quality and required output capacity enabling the production of these high-quality pellets from logs. The most important process is the debarking. The single log debarker with ring rotor is the most suitable solution for straight logs with lengths > 1,8 m and a diameter > 100 mm. Industrial logs with large curves,in short lengths and small diameters, and with knots can be debarked in high quantities with a rotary debarker. The log buying criteria is expanded by using rotary debarkers which results in lower costs and higher fl exibility. HOLTEC offers concepts for all capacities. Two chipper infeeds for pellet production with an integrated single log debarker have already been delivered to the Russian pellet producers MLT and TFK by HOLTEC. Last year HOLTEC delivered a chipper infeed with rotary debarker to a German pellet producer. In order to minimise handling of the logs a very heavy duty log deck was installed at the beginning of the logyard where the logs can be loaded directly. For separating the logs, pre-alignment and feeding of the rotary debarker HOLTEC uses their classic stair feeder. Behind the debarker the remaining dirt, sand, stones and lose bark are removed through a gap. The chipper is fed via a robust chain conveyor with offset sidebar chain, designed in North America especially for this application.
